Classic Cars in China – Collectors and Challenges

Classic Cars in China – Collectors and Challenges

Nov 12

Unprecedented economic growth and the emergence of an upper middle class in China has whetted appetites for luxury in the People’s Republic. Collecting cars has always been a high-end pastime, and the newly rich Chinese are not immune to the appeal. However, the lack of an automotive culture, as well as very strict government limits on auto transport and importation have made it difficult for collecting to take off in China. Many owners find that government regulations prevent them from even getting license plates, so their vehicles either end up immobile in garages, or make occasional appearances in parades and events. Collectors’ groups are currently working to relax some of the restrictions and allow their hobby wider leeway in their country.
